Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing job tasks and the skills required in the labor market. As work conditions change, the ability to transition between jobs and even industries may become increasingly important.

Pressure on Women and the Need for Adaptation

Women are particularly under greater pressure to adapt to changes brought about by artificial intelligence. According to research findings, women are more exposed to automation and AI changes compared to men, especially due to the industries in which they are employed. These changes do not mean the disappearance of jobs, but rather that the way work is done will change, and many workers will need to learn new skills and adapt.

The Need for Employer Flexibility

Discussions about job transitions typically focus on workers, but there is another aspect. Employers need to be more flexible in recognizing real experiences across different industries. Research conducted with successful women who have transitioned from unrelated industries to the construction industry shows that employers need to change how they recognize experiences gained in various sectors. Changing industries does not mean starting from scratch.

According to a study conducted on 655 women in Australian construction companies, many of these women have transitioned from various industries such as healthcare, education, transportation, and finance to the construction industry. These job changers bring valuable skills that include management, communication, and collaboration. However, the main challenge is for employers to properly recognize these skills.

The Australian construction industry is currently facing a labor shortage, and attracting women could help fill this gap. Research shows that increasing women's participation in construction could add up to 51,000 new workers to the industry by 2029.

This situation indicates that adaptation requires employers to better identify transferable skills. In the age of artificial intelligence, while workers must be prepared to adapt, employers must also change and pay attention to the skills individuals have acquired before entering a new industry.
