Health Concerns Arising from Data Center Noise in Australia

Data centers have significantly expanded as critical infrastructure for data storage and management over the past two decades. However, concerns about the noise generated by these centers and its potential impact on the health of local residents in Australia are on the rise. In the United States, particularly in Michigan, residents have strongly opposed the construction of data centers in their neighborhoods, and this issue has now reached Australia.

Noise Generated by Data Centers

Data centers typically use various equipment for cooling and heat management. This equipment includes air conditioning units, chillers, and backup generators, all of which produce a certain level of noise. The sounds generated by this equipment are often described as a low-frequency hum that can reach levels of 85 decibels (dBA). Meanwhile, according to health standards, the maximum allowable ambient noise in residential areas in Australia is between 35 to 40 decibels at night.

Data centers must prove that their generated noise does not exceed permissible limits to obtain environmental permits. To this end, companies must provide an independent noise assessment and introduce noise reduction measures, which include selecting low-noise equipment and appropriate building design.

Potential Health Consequences

According to a report by the World Health Organization, excessive noise can lead to issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and sleep disturbances. However, there is currently insufficient information to establish a direct link between the noise from data centers and health impacts. Studies indicate that noise annoyance can lead to negative effects on mental and physical health, but these effects typically improve over time as noise annoyance decreases.

In 2015, the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia conducted a systematic review of evidence related to wind farms and their effects on human health, concluding that "there is no direct evidence of the impact of wind farm noise on physical or mental health." These findings may also be useful in assessing the impacts of data centers in the future.

Last month, the Victoria Environment Protection Authority stood against the construction of a data center in Campbellfield, north of Melbourne, due to noise concerns. Additionally, the local council rejected a proposal for a data center in Hazelmere, Western Australia, due to concerns about the noise impacts on residents and a school.

Overall, while there is still insufficient information to fully assess the health impacts of noise from data centers, existing concerns indicate a need for more thorough investigations and long-term research in this area. Meanwhile, adopting appropriate measures to reduce noise can help prevent health issues in the future.
