Climate change, as one of the major environmental challenges, not only affects human communities but also has profound impacts on natural ecosystems. One concerning consequence of these changes is the increased success of invasive species in new environments. Recent studies show that after storms such as Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, certain invasive species have significantly thrived in marine ecosystems.
Consequences of Hurricane Maria and the Emergence of Invasive Species
Hurricane Maria in 2017, with wind speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour, caused widespread damage to infrastructure and local communities, claiming the lives of nearly 3000 people. This storm affected not only human lives but also natural ecosystems. At sea level, the storm displaced large amounts of sand and silt on the seabed, leading to the destruction of native seagrass meadows. However, among this, invasive species such as Halophila stipulacea, which naturally occurs in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, rapidly grew in the affected areas and significantly expanded in marine ecosystems.

The Role of Climate Change in the Spread of Invasive Species
Studies indicate that climate change is increasing the success of invasive species. In a review that included 67 studies on 30 marine invasive species, it was found that climate change typically leads to increased abundance or establishment of invasive species. This relationship varies particularly under different environmental conditions and species types. For example, during a warming period in the northeastern Pacific from 2019 to 2021, temperatures were on average 1.6 degrees Celsius above normal. Such changes can allow invasive species to thrive under new conditions, while many native species face serious challenges.
However, it should be noted that climate change is only one of the influencing factors in the spread of invasive species. Factors such as timing, environmental conditions, and species types also play significant roles. Additionally, while climate change may increase the number of invasive species in some cases, in others, these species may fail to establish in new areas due to unsuitable environmental conditions.
To address this crisis, there is a need for actions aimed at ecosystem management. Environmental managers can prevent the spread of invasive species by early identification and investment in early detection systems. These actions can include monitoring environmental DNA, citizen reporting programs, and water monitoring and treatments. Strengthening the capacities of relevant institutions is also essential in this regard.
Ultimately, climate change and invasive species pose a significant challenge to biodiversity and marine ecosystems. Given current trends, there is an increasing need for a better understanding of the impacts of these two phenomena and for effective actions to manage them.
