Donald Trump, the President of the United States, is facing concerns from his allies in Asia ahead of hosting Xi Jinping, the leader of China. These concerns have particularly increased due to the possibility of Washington softening its stance in support of Taiwan in order to gain economic concessions from Beijing.
Change in U.S. Rhetoric
Concerns about concessions regarding Taiwan have intensified since May, when Trump described arms sales to Taiwan as a "negotiating lever." This change in rhetoric could have serious implications for regional security, and analysts and officials from Taiwan, Japan, and the U.S. have warned that any change in America's position could embolden Beijing in its actions.

Positions of Taiwan and Japan
In light of these developments, Taiwanese officials have clearly communicated their positions to the U.S., especially ahead of the Trump-Xi meeting. Shen Yuchung, a senior Taiwanese official, has expressed hope that a situation does not arise that would harm Taiwan. In this context, Sanae Takaichi, the Prime Minister of Japan, is also trying to engage in dialogue with Trump to convey Tokyo's concerns regarding Trump's positions on Taiwan.
As Trump seeks to boost his popularity, he may advance ahead of the midterm elections by delivering positive economic results to voters. However, this could come at the expense of Taiwan's security. Tokyo's biggest concern is that Trump may adopt a softer stance on Taiwan in exchange for China's commitment to purchase American goods.
According to experts, even a small change in Trump's wording could send significant messages to Beijing. The "One China" policy that the U.S. adheres to indicates a rejection of China's sovereignty over Taiwan, but any change in this policy could lead to serious crises in international relations.
Potential Chinese attacks on Taiwan could have severe economic consequences for the world, as Taiwan produces over 90% of the world's advanced semiconductors. Therefore, the expression of concerns by U.S. allies in this regard is very important and could help maintain the balance of power in the region.
