Australia is currently reviewing and developing mandatory standards for large data centers that affect the use of energy and water in these critical infrastructures. New Measures and Their Implications

The Australian government is currently seeking to establish mandatory national standards for data centers that include the use of energy, water, and land. This legislation is set to be introduced early next year. This move could help improve transparency and assist in reducing local concerns regarding the environmental impacts of these centers.

For example, in Sydney, data centers currently consume about 3.5 billion liters of water annually, which is less than 1 percent of the city's water supply. However, this figure is expected to reach 25 percent in the next decade. This change could significantly impact environmental and social factors, especially in areas facing water shortages.

Many of these centers have been proposed in hot and dry regions, raising further concerns about water supply. Therefore, optimizing water and energy consumption in these centers must be prioritized. However, merely improving efficiency is not enough, and overall consumption of water and energy needs to be considered.

International experiences, especially in Ireland and the United States, show that the environmental impacts of data centers are primarily local, and host communities often oppose these centers due to issues related to noise, energy, and water. Therefore, creating transparency and collecting data can assist policymakers in making appropriate decisions.

Ultimately, the future of data centers in Australia heavily depends on the government's ability to manage demand and their environmental impacts. Establishing mandatory standards and collecting accurate data can help reduce tensions and local concerns and prevent negative environmental effects.
