The bad smell of wet clothes is a common problem in households that many people face. This unpleasant odor is especially noticeable when clothes are left in the washing machine for a while. But what factors cause this bad smell and how can it be eliminated?

Causes of Bad Smell in Wet Clothes

Wet clothes at room temperature create an ideal environment for the growth of microbes. Moisture, heat, and nutrients in the form of dead skin cells and skin oils provide conditions for rapid bacterial growth. One of the main bacteria responsible for the bad smell of clothes is Moraxella osloensis. This bacterium can survive in humid conditions and produces specific compounds that create an unpleasant odor.

Type of Fabric and Its Impact on Odor

The type of fabric also affects the occurrence of this problem. Cotton fabrics, due to their hydrophilic properties, easily absorb water, which makes it harder for bacteria to thrive in them. In contrast, polyester fabrics have hydrophobic properties and attract oils and sweat, which can lead to increased bacterial growth and consequently bad odors. Recent studies have shown that polyester fabrics retain unpleasant odors more than cotton and viscose.

To eliminate the problem of bad-smelling clothes, the best solution is to transfer clothes to the dryer immediately after washing or dry them in the open air. Additionally, soaking clothes in a concentrated vinegar solution before washing can be effective, as vinegar has antimicrobial properties. Washing clothes at higher temperatures can also help reduce bacterial load, although care should be taken to follow fabric labels to avoid damaging the clothes.

Ultimately, the choice of fabric, washing behavior, and the lifespan of clothes are deeply interconnected. While washing clothes in cold water helps preserve their longevity, if clothes smell bad after washing, you may have to discard them sooner than expected. This is a challenge that should be considered to avoid harming both the environment and the quality of the clothes.
