Spekboom (Portulacaria afra), as a succulent shrub resistant to drought, grows well in the dry regions of South Africa. This plant, with its green and juicy leaves, not only serves as a natural source for water storage but is also effective in soil stabilization and erosion reduction. Due to its unique characteristics, spekboom can play an important role in meeting food needs and improving food security in South Africa.

Food Potential of Spekboom

Research shows that spekboom is a good source of vitamin C and can be included as one of the vegetables in people's diets. In one study, experts examined the sensory and nutritional properties of raw and cooked spekboom leaves. The results indicated that cooking these leaves makes them softer and lighter while retaining similar properties to other leafy vegetables. Although many people still have limited knowledge about spekboom as a food source, the majority have expressed a willingness to try and consume it.

Challenges Ahead and Solutions

In a survey of 120 people, about 84 percent had seen spekboom before, but only 22 percent had consumed the plant more than once in the past year. This indicates that spekboom is recognized as a nutritious food, but it is still not widely used. To increase the consumption of this plant, there is a need to provide better information about health benefits, preparation methods, and availability in stores. Additionally, reasonable pricing could also motivate more consumption.

Currently, South Africa's food system faces serious challenges such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment, with about 63.5 percent of households lacking sufficient food. The use of indigenous plants like spekboom can help improve food security in this country. This plant requires little water and grows well in poor soils, thus it can be considered a sustainable option in agriculture and food supply.

Spekboom is not only a sustainable food option but can also create sustainable value chains by processing it into products like pickles and canned goods. This action can help reduce post-harvest waste and create job opportunities in local communities. Ultimately, spekboom can transition from a marginal plant to a staple component in modern African diets.
