Vladimir Putin knows well how to convey his messages. On Sunday morning, Russia launched an airstrike on a train that was about to cross the border from Ukraine into Poland. The attack successfully hit its target, but fortunately, no one was harmed as Ukraine's security quickly alerted itself to the danger and evacuated the train. This incident, which occurred near the border of a NATO member country, sent a clear message from Putin to Europe: "Get out of here and don’t stay here—otherwise, you will face the consequences."
Analysis of the War Situation and Changes on the Battlefield
During this trip to Kyiv, I was also on a special train with several senior European diplomats and politicians returning from a national security conference. We thought that given our large number, Russia would not dare to attack this group. However, the recent attack, which was just a small example of what Ukrainians face daily, indicates worrying changes in the dynamics of the battlefield. Russia has deployed a new version of the Iranian Shahed-136 drone called Geran-5. This drone resembles a type of missile, has a speed of 370 miles per hour, and with the ability to carry an explosive payload of nearly 200 pounds, poses a significant threat to Ukraine. Currently, Ukraine has no drones to counter it, and the lack of defensive missiles has left Ukrainians in a vulnerable position.

Economic and Social Challenges in Ukraine
Winter is rapidly approaching Ukraine. At the conference, I had a discussion with several senior energy and mining executives from Ukraine about how to maintain energy and heat under harsh winter conditions. Despite the challenges, they continue their efforts to fortify energy infrastructure against airstrikes. However, just an hour after this discussion, news broke of an attack on two large steel plants, which directly impacted Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
The Russia-Ukraine war has now entered its fifth year, and every few months, it seems that the advantage shifts from one side to the other. While Ukraine had recently succeeded in carrying out more attacks deep into Russian territory, it appears that recent innovations in Russian drone technology are once again shifting the balance in favor of the Kremlin. This situation may also assist Iran if Moscow shares Geran-5 components with Tehran.
In this war, budget may be the most decisive factor. Roksolana Pidlasa, a Ukrainian economist and member of parliament, openly spoke about Ukraine's financial challenges and pointed out that the war has become very costly, and the country cannot even cover its basic military expenses. Prime Minister Serhiy Kravchuk continued the government's efforts to increase resilience against attacks and emphasized the need for decentralization in the energy and logistics sectors. However, declining demand in the energy market is a worrying sign of the country's economic situation.
