Universities Australia, as the leading body of universities in Australia, has asked the federal government to introduce discount cards and cost reductions for all domestic and international students. Financial Evidence and Economic Pressures
This request comes after data was released showing that since 2021, the basic living costs for students have increased by 29%, while the general inflation rate has been 24%. Additionally, research conducted in May indicates that one in three Australian students is facing serious financial difficulties. This situation is particularly concerning among young students, as about 48% of respondents to this research were studying full-time, and another 22% were studying at other higher education institutions.

Consequences of Lack of Financial Support
Research shows that the inability to meet food and living needs has become a serious problem for students. About 58% to 69% of young people in recent years have reported being unable to access healthy food, and over 50% have stated that they have had to skip meals. These financial problems not only affect education but can also lead to students not completing their courses.
The Australian government has taken steps to reduce university costs, but these measures are still not sufficient. For example, a $3 billion debt relief in HECS-HELP and increased rental assistance has been provided in 2023 and 2024. However, rising tuition costs in certain fields such as law and arts and inadequate support for students exacerbate this issue.
Ultimately, expanding facilities and discount cards for students could help alleviate their financial problems, but this action requires appropriate funding in the current economic conditions. The Australian government, aiming to increase the higher education participation rate from 60% to 80% by 2050, must seek solutions to reduce students' living costs.
