The Necessity of Optimizing Energy Consumption in Government Buildings

Seyed Taher Hosseini, the head of the Smart Governance Think Tank, at the "Energy Efficiency in the Administrative Sector" meeting, stated that about 60% of energy is wasted in public buildings across the country, emphasizing the importance of optimizing energy consumption in this sector. Considering that the government is the largest owner of buildings in the country, a significant portion of this waste can be compensated through technical and cultural solutions.

Energy Imbalance Challenge

Hosseini further referred to the energy imbalance crisis in Iran, saying: Despite having vast oil and gas reserves, Iran faces a shortfall of 300 million cubic meters of gas, the main fuel for power plants and industries. This shortfall means an unsustainable energy supply during the cold days of the year, ultimately leading to losses amounting to $11 to $18.5 billion. These losses not only negatively impact production and labor but can also affect inflation.

The Role of Offices in Energy Consumption

Hosseini also pointed to the high volume of water and energy consumption in government buildings, stating: The Iranian administrative system, with over 2.4 million employees, has created spaces covering millions of square meters. In these spaces, unreasonable use of energy and water has become a problem. To solve the energy imbalance crisis, deeper actions must be taken in this sector to both increase the level of impact and convey the message of reforms to society.

Optimization and Smart Solutions

Hosseini noted that windows are the largest holes for energy loss in government buildings and suggested that single-glazed windows should be replaced with double-glazed and standard windows. This change could save up to 80% in costs and 90% in energy consumption. Additionally, smartening boiler rooms using smart control systems can help reduce energy waste and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

Hosseini also mentioned the necessity of transitioning from outdated air conditioning units, stating: The share of cooling systems during peak consumption reaches 30 to 35 thousand megawatts, a significant portion of which is related to government buildings. Given these challenges, optimizing energy consumption in government buildings is not only a necessity but also an opportunity to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
