The Jewish community in Canadian universities is increasingly complaining about the ineffectiveness of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (EDI) policies. Results from a new study show that these policies have significantly failed to address the concerns of this community, raising further worries especially as Jews feel insecure following the attacks on October 7, 2023.
Worrying Statistics on Hate Crimes
In 2025, Jews constituted 70 percent of all reported hate crimes in Canada, while making up only one percent of the Canadian population. This statistic highlights the severity of the crisis, particularly as recent attacks on Israel and the harsh reactions to them have heightened tensions in both Jewish and non-Jewish communities.

Neglecting Jewish Concerns in EDI Policies
Recent studies indicate that many Jewish faculty members and staff in universities believe that EDI offices have generally ignored their concerns. Only 32 percent of respondents were aware of any institutional policy regarding antisemitism, while 93 percent were aware of policies related to other forms of discrimination.
In evaluating EDI efforts, respondents rated the focused efforts on Jews an average of 1.7 out of 5, while the figure for efforts related to other groups was 3.4. This gap in attention to Jewish concerns and the lack of responsiveness from institutions have increased feelings of alienation and despair within this community.
Many participants in this research expressed that they expected EDI offices to provide similar tools to combat antisemitism, but instead faced silence and indifference. One participant explicitly stated, "I feel like everyone I have worked for has turned their back on me."
This situation underscores the need for a reevaluation of EDI policies and serious attention to the specific experiences and issues of the Jewish community. Especially as criticisms of Israel and anti-Zionist sentiments have increased in academic circles, it is essential for universities to more effectively confront these challenges.
