In an unprecedented project, researchers in northern Alaska are investigating whether Arctic ecosystems can adapt to the climate crisis. In this region, a team of scientists cautiously approaches the tussock grass masses and moves towards the stream of water flowing from the Brooks Range.
Adaptation in the Natural World
Near the Galbraith stream, these researchers use a net to catch the white-crowned sparrows. These birds have recently arrived from southern areas to feed on insects that will soon pour onto the tundra like storm clouds. The Arctic summer is very short, and the birds have only a few weeks to establish their territories, mate, lay eggs, and raise their chicks on a diet rich in insects.
Researchers collect blood, feather, and fecal samples from each bird that is trapped to see what they are eating and how this diet changes throughout the summer. These assessments help researchers understand whether and how species can work together in a changing ecosystem and adapt.
Challenges Ahead
Arctic ecosystems are threatened by climate change, and this project seeks to gain a better understanding of biological interactions in this region.
